The power of multisensory environments in schools

Not every difficulty in a learning environment is about academics. Sometimes it has more to do with how a student’s nervous system responds to the world around them.

In a school setting, noise, lights, expectations and constant stimulation can easily become overwhelming for some students. Stress builds up, attention fades, and frustration may turn into disruptive behavior.

In moments like these, a student doesn’t always need another instruction or correction. What they may need is a moment to pause, breathe, and reset.

👉 So, what if the school itself could offer a space designed exactly for those moments? A place where, instead of escalating, the situation can gently settle and regulation can begin again.

At Šiaulių Salduvės progimnazija, a mainstream school in Lithuania, students aged 7 to 15 have access to a multisensory room designed to support emotional regulation, learning, and well-being throughout the school day.

It is used by students with a wide range of needs — including Autism Spectrum Disorder, learning difficulties, or emotional and behavioral challenges — as well as by those who simply need a moment to pause and regain focus.

Equipped with Qinera’s multisensory technology — where light, projection, sound, vibration, and other sensory elements work in sync to create interactive and immersive environments — the space offers a predictable setting where students can calm down, regulate sensory input, and reconnect with learning before returning to class.

Why a multisensory space in a mainstream school and how it works?

One of the goals at the school was to create a more inclusive learning environment where every student can participate in a way that fits their needs.

“In a modern school, where inclusive education is a key focus, such a space helps support students experiencing stress, sensory difficulties, or emotional and behavioral challenges.”

Its use varies depending on the situation. Some students attend scheduled sessions, particularly those receiving additional support, while others use the space for short sensory breaks to calm down or regain focus during the school day.

In one lesson, for example, a student who was struggling to focus and showing behavioral difficulties was brought into the sensory space.

“The student calmed down, regained focus, and after about 15 minutes returned to the lesson and successfully completed the tasks.”

Beyond these moments, the space is also used in more structured sessions. These may be individual or in small groups and are guided by the school’s multisensory specialist. Activities can include sensory exploration, emotional recognition and regulation, as well as attention and concentration training. And It is also sometimes used for integrated lessons linked to the curriculum — for example in subjects such as music, art, or ethics.

What elements does the space include?

The multisensory room includes Qinera’s SHX system, which allows all the elements in the space—lights, sounds, projections, and vibration—to shift at once, creating an immersive and enveloping atmosphere. One of the key features of this technology is that it enables users to actively interact with the environment. Students can do this through control devices such as a tablet, the Button 6 controller, or a sensory cube.

In practice, this opens the door to many different types of activities. For example, a student might sit on the vibroacoustic chair while listening to relaxing sounds and watching slow-moving visuals projected on the wall. In another activity, students may explore textures with sensory toys or observe the bubbles of the bubble tube rising slowly while practicing breathing exercises. They can also interact with the fiber optic lights of the Luminea fountain, playing hide-and-seek or using them during guided sensory activities.

Students can also move around the bubble pool or advance through a story using the controller, while lights, sounds, and projections change in sync. Additional effects can enhance the experience—for example, a fan may turn on during a windy landscape scene, or a bubble machine may fill the room with bubbles.

Benefits of a multisensory space in school

Relax and reduce emotional tension: When students feel overwhelmed or anxious, the space offers a quieter and more predictable setting where they can slow down, breathe, and gradually calm their nervous system.

Develop self-regulation skills: Through guided sensory activities, students learn to recognize emotions and find strategies to manage them during challenging moments of the school day.

Improve attention and focus: By regulating sensory input and reducing distractions, students can reset and return to lessons with improved concentration.

Support concentration and memory: Changes in colors, sounds, and projections capture students’ attention and make abstract concepts easier to retain and recall.

Feel safe: For some students—especially those with sensory sensitivities or autism—everyday classroom environments can feel intense. A controlled sensory setting offers a space where they can feel calmer, interact, communicate, or simply take the time they need to regulate and feel safe.

Encourage interaction, curiosity, and engagement: Interactive sensory elements invite students to explore, participate, and take an active role in the experience. This sense of agency often increases motivation, encourages communication, and helps students stay engaged in activities for longer periods.

Encourage social interaction: Group activities around light shows, music, or projections help students share experiences, cooperate, and build relationships in a motivating and supportive setting.

Support teachers and professionals in their daily work: The multisensory space also becomes a valuable tool for educators and specialists. It provides structured ways to support students during moments of dysregulation, helps guide emotional and sensory activities, and offers an additional environment where learning and support strategies can take place more effectively.

A positive change in the school environment

Since introducing sensory stimulation activities, the school has observed a noticeable shift in the overall climate.

Students who use the space regularly show improved emotional regulation, better concentration, greater participation in lessons, and stronger emotional well-being.

For the team at Šiaulių Salduvės progimnazija school, the multisensory room represents a broader vision of education.

“Multisensory spaces in schools are extremely valuable. They help ensure students’ emotional well-being, promote self-regulation, increase inclusion, and create more favorable conditions for successful learning.”

👏 Special thanks to Officeday, our partner in Lithuania, for bringing this project to life.

Sensory experiences at the core of development.

Sensory systems are the first bridge to the world around us: through sight, hearing, touch, smell, and movement we build our identity, understand our needs, and begin to make sense of experiences.

In the early years of life, every experience leaves a deep mark: a sound that sparks curiosity, a light that surprises, a touch that soothes. It is through the senses that children start to discover the world, building their identity and learning how to relate to their surroundings.

Sensory maturation at this stage happens quickly and forms the foundation of all future development: from motor to cognitive, emotional, and social skills. Providing environments rich in appropriate stimuli means opening pathways to growth, autonomy, and well-being.

Discover, explore, grow: The magic of Multisensory Rooms

Multisensory rooms are created with this purpose: to allow children to experience primary and stimulating activities that require no prior knowledge — only the desire to perceive, explore, and be amazed.

In SHX multisensory rooms, children can engage with basic stimuli in an accessible way. A newborn cradled in a fetal bag finds calm and relief; a crawling child heads toward the ball pool; a button that changes the colors of the entire room sparks surprise and curiosity.

These accessible environments, rich in possibilities, support the maturation of sensory systems, strengthen the relationship with the environment, and allow a better understanding of each child’s preferences and abilities.

The added value of Qinera’s technology (SHX) lies in the ability to adapt and control stimuli: lights, images, sounds, and vibrations can be adjusted according to the child’s cognitive skills and developmental stage, creating meaningful and personalized experiences.

The senses as a driver of learning

As an occupational therapist with years of experience, I know that every motor milestone — holding the head up, sitting, crawling, walking — is born from a deep motivation: the desire to explore, to discover, to feel.

SHX multisensory rooms offer a wide variety of stimuli that spark curiosity and motor motivation. A vibrating bed synchronized with music helps the child perceive their own body and promotes relaxation. A luminous sphere that switches on and off stimulates the urge to move. A snuggle bag provides vestibular experiences that contribute to calmness and well-being.

Each object becomes an opportunity for motor and communicative learning.

Movement, in these rooms, is experienced as a need, a source of pleasure, and a path to discovery. Thanks to the safety of the spaces and the variety of surfaces, the child can explore without fear, finding in the multisensory environment a context of inclusion that also embraces those with motor delays, hypotonia, or insecurity.

From perception to action

Perception is the foundation of all learning. By following an object with their eyes, turning toward a sound, reacting to touch, or discovering scents and textures, the child builds their first cognitive connections.

Over time, perception turns into action: recognizing, imitating, anticipating, remembering, solving.

SHX multisensory rooms represent a true laboratory of integrated perceptions. Fiber optics, tactile discs, sound effects, ball pools, and sensory stories create immersive scenarios that stimulate multiple senses in a coherent way, reinforcing learning. With a simple switch or a tablet, a child can change the color of the entire room, understanding the cause-and-effect relationship.

Through these experiences, attention, memory, and problem-solving skills are developed in a context that combines play and therapy.

Why SHX Rooms make the difference

Multisensory rooms are therapeutic and educational tools that support overall development in early childhood. Thanks to Qinera’s interactive SHX system, each stimulus can be adapted to the child’s needs, transforming the room into a safe, stimulating, and motivating environment.

Whether it is a newborn in need of early stimulation, a child with motor disabilities, or a young explorer full of curiosity, the multisensory environment becomes a valuable ally. SHX multisensory rooms provide a unique context where play turns into learning, perception into action, and development finds fertile ground to grow strong and secure.

Multisensory rooms are becoming more and more common in educational, therapeutic, and residential settings. Their ability to stimulate, calm, or emotionally support people with diverse needs has turned them into an essential tool.

Here are five ways to use them that might surprise you:

1. Supporting daily routines in elderly care homes

A sensory environment can accompany different moments of the day with light, sound, and projections: energizing in the morning, calming after lunch, relaxing at sunset. This helps establish healthier rhythms and routines, promotes participation, and strengthens residents’ social connections.

Benefits of a sensory routine for older adults

Encourages participation and movement during active hours

Supports emotional regulation and memory stimulation

Enhances social connection during shared experiences

Reduces stress and agitation, especially in people with dementia

Promotes better sleep hygiene through structured sensory cues

A real example: Multisensory Room at STIMA Embajadores
Located in a senior day care center in Madrid, Spain, this space was designed to support daily routines and therapeutic interventions for older adults through a fully immersive environment. With the help of our own technology and specialized lighting, sound, and audiovisual equipment, the room adapts to each session — whether the goal is stimulation, relaxation, emotional regulation, or memory work.

2. Providing emotional support for teenagers

Some schools already use multisensory rooms as safe spaces where adolescents can learn to manage emotions, reduce anxiety, or simply take a few minutes to disconnect. Adolescence is a stage marked by emotional intensity, academic pressure, and constant change. Many students struggle to find spaces where they can manage stress, reset, and feel safe.

That’s why more schools and universities are turning to multisensory spaces as part of their wellbeing strategy.

Benefits of a multisensory room for teenagers

Reduces stress and anxiety in a safe, non-clinical space

Encourages self-care and emotional autonomy

Fosters inclusion and accessibility

Contributes to a positive and caring school climate

3. Creating immersive learning experiences in children

In educational settings, these rooms allow abstract concepts — like the seasons or continents — to be explored through immersive projections, sounds, textures, and light play. Perfect for all types of learning centers.

Turning abstract concepts into real-life experiences

Storytelling: using light, vibration, and voice to spark imagination and comprehension

By combining projection, sound, light, movement, and interaction, these spaces allow children to see, hear, touch, and feel what they’re learning — making even the most abstract topics easier to understand and remember.

4. Enhancing early stimulation in young children

In early intervention centers, sensory environments are used to stimulate the senses of young children and support cognitive, motor, and communication development from the first months of life.

Why early sensory stimulation matters

5. Promoting well-being at work for adults

Some companies are beginning to introduce sensory rooms as rest areas for employees. A break with soft lighting, relaxing sounds, or a starry sky can make a big difference in workplace stress.

Endless possibilities

As you can see, the possibilities of these rooms go far beyond traditional therapy. At Qinera, we believe multisensory rooms should adapt to the people who use them — not the other way around. That’s why we design each space according to the specific goals, needs, and context of every user. We’re proud to be part of this transformation, making sensory environments more accessible, personalised, and impactful.

At Hôpital Privé du Confluent in Nantes, France, multisensory rooms have been incorporated to enhance the patient experience.

Waiting before surgery is a delicate moment. People arrive with a mix of emotions: fear, anxiety, nervousness, fatigue… and in some cases, also pain. Added to this are uncertainty, uncomfortable silence, and incessant thoughts. Emotions are heightened, and the body responds with tension. All this discomfort negatively impacts how the process is experienced.

In this context, the environment can have a significant impact. If the space is cold, impersonal, or noisy, as often happens in hospitals, the discomfort intensifies, and the wait becomes even more difficult.

Faced with this scenario, many hospitals are seeking new ways to emotionally support patients and make this moment more bearable. A great ally to achieve this can be the environment, particularly a multisensory environment designed with therapeutic intent and emotional care.

This is the case at Hôpital Privé du Confluent in Nantes, France, which transformed two of its outpatient surgery waiting rooms into multisensory environments.

Spaces that regulate, soothe, and support

The project, developed in collaboration with our partner ArchiZenco, had a clear goal: to turn these spaces into multisensory environments that help reduce anxiety, create a sense of calm, and improve the emotional well-being of patients before a surgical procedure.

In this way, the environment supports the patient and surrounds them with a pleasant atmosphere, rather than adding more stress—helping each person prepare emotionally for what’s ahead. It’s not the same to wait in an impersonal, distant space as it is to wait in one that embraces you, invites you to breathe, and reconnect with yourself.

To achieve this, the Nantes hospital integrated our multisensory technology to transform these areas into sensory regulation experiences—creating an environment that cares, calms, and accompanies patients during one of the most delicate moments of their hospital journey.

What does a preoperative multisensory room include?

At the Hôpital Privé du Confluent, the aim was to ease the emotional load and offer a more gentle, human-centered experience. To do so, the hospital redesigned its preoperative waiting rooms in the following ways:

The typical bright white hospital lighting was replaced with warm, diffused lighting—designed to lower arousal levels and reduce sensory overload. This softer light helps create a calm atmosphere that invites rest and disconnection.

The visual setting was also reimagined. Cold or neutral colors were replaced with soft tones, and carefully chosen decorative elements were added to convey warmth, closeness, and a sense of welcome. Every detail—from the walls to the materials—was intentionally selected to break away from the usual coldness of clinical spaces.

Multisensory devices were also integrated into each room, using Qinera’s technology. These include bubble tubes with their own light and vibration features, designed to create a soothing and immersive environment. Through visual, auditory, and tactile stimuli, these elements provide relaxing experiences specifically intended to reduce anxiety, support emotional regulation, and accompany the patient during a highly sensitive moment. The result is a space that not only transforms the perception of the hospital environment but also actively contributes to the patient’s emotional well-being. This device became the visual and sensory centerpiece of the room: its gentle lights, the soft bubbling sounds, and its continuous movement invite the gaze to settle, the breath to slow, and the heart to find a new rhythm.

With Qinera’s bubble tubes, it’s possible to create environments where light, vibration, reflection, and interactivity open up a world of possibilities. They stimulate visual tracking, play, and mindfulness. And above all, they allow the person to connect with something simple, repetitive, and deeply calming.

In the hospital’s waiting room, the tube becomes an anchor point. One bubble rises. Another falls. The tube vibrates gently. A soft melody whispers. Attention, previously caught in fear or anxiety, shifts toward a calm, steady stimulus. A comforting space opens up—one that quiets the mind and brings a sense of peace.

What is a multisensory room in a hospital?

Qinera’s multisensory environments are spaces where light, sound, vibration, and other stimuli are harmoniously combined to create controlled sensory experiences. Designed to be physically and cognitively accessible and pleasant, these spaces invite people to reconnect with themselves, regulate their emotions, and positively engage their senses.

Multisensory rooms can serve a wide range of purposes: therapeutic, educational, developmental, recreational, or simply for overall well-being. Thanks to versatile elements like bubble tubes, fiber optics, image projections, or immersive music, it’s possible to create environments tailored to each person, each moment, and each specific need.

In hospitals, a multisensory room might be used in:

A pre-surgery context, to reduce anxiety, generate calm, and provide emotional support for the patient.

A labour room, to help mothers relax, breathe, and go through the process with greater serenity.

In waiting areas, to make the wait more bearable and offer emotional comfort to both patients and their families.

Or even in an Intensive Care Unit—as is the case at Hospital Universitario de Bellvitge in Barcelona, Spain, which has installed 70 multisensory boxes in its ICU to support patients’ circadian rhythms, reduce polypharmacy, and alleviate post-ICU syndrome, among other benefits—marking a global milestone.👉 Read the article about the Bellvitge hospital case

This project in Nantes reflects how, through a combination of design and technology, it’s possible to transform cold medical environments into more human places. Because small stimuli, like a warm light, a moving bubble, or a soft melody, can have a profound impact on how a person experiences that waiting moment or any other sensitive situation within a hospital.

More and more hospitals are beginning to transform their spaces and incorporate emotional well-being as an essential part of care.

💜 Thanks to our partner in France for continuing to bring multisensory technology to the spaces where it’s most needed.

This article from Rehasalud, a neurorehabilitation centre located in A Coruña (northwest Spain), illustrates how multisensory rooms have become a key element in supporting neurological recovery processes. Through specific case examples and testimonials we discover how these spaces are used to enhance therapy through a sensory, human, and personalised approach.

Let’s get into it 👇.

Effective neurological rehabilitation is based on four key pillars: neuropsychology, physiotherapy, speech and language therapy, and occupational therapy. At Rehasalud we use a multisensory room which makes a meaningful difference and enhances the work within each of these areas.

Our team of specialists in neurorehabilitation and comprehensive functional rehabilitation firmly believes in the value of a sensory stimulation environment as therapeutic support.

As Irene Suárez, coordinator and speech and language therapist, points out: “This space enables us to offer more comprehensive therapies, where the sensory environment becomes a positive stimulus for our patients’ recovery.”

An environment that transforms therapy

Our multisensory rooms use versatile materials that help to achieve therapeutic goals and foster relaxation.

The weighted blanket is one such resource that is fundamental for achieving a state of relaxation, calm, and emotional regulation: “For us, it is a versatile tool that can be used to work on proprioception, body awareness, tactile stimulation, and even strength,” explains the neurorehabilitation team at the centre.

We also work with two key devices in the therapy: the Luminea lamp and fibre optics. The Luminea lamp—used in conjunction with its app—is a highly valuable resource for relaxation as well as cognitive stimulation. Activities with the Luminea lamp can be designed to target crucial skills such as:

Attention, memory, and cognitive programming, using lights that guide mazes or memorisation sequences

Eye-hand and bimanual coordination, encouraging exploration and movement

Language stimulation, fostering vocabulary recall and communicative experiences

Support for difficulties with reading, writing, and arithmetic, by enhancing task focus, reducing line skipping while reading, improving graphomotor skills, and facilitating mathematical activities

Additionally, fibre optics are an excellent tool for working on proprioception, fine motor skills, and integration of the affected side in individuals with hemispatial neglect. Handling the luminous strands encourages upper limb mobilisation through activities such as untangling, braiding, or combing the light fibres. Fibre optics thus enable the design of therapeutic exercises that are relevant to daily life.

The ACERCARTE project by Eva Somolinos—using both the vibroacoustic system and the Luminea equipment—is a recently implemented programme that has helped us surpass our therapeutic goals. Using renowned paintings and sound compositions specifically created for them, these sessions offer patients a physical and sensory experience that merges art, light, and music.

Resources that enhance rehabilitation

The ability to feel music and sound through vibrations not only enhances the physical and emotional benefits, but also strengthens cognitive and sensory work in a holistic manner. Thus, the Vibroacoustic Kit—consisting of a sofa and cushion—is one of the most highly valued features of our multisensory room.

This system can play any sound, song, or audio file, adapting to the needs of each individual, activity, and therapeutic objective. Vibroacoustics play a central role in multisensory stimulation. Through the vibrations transmitted by the sofa and cushion we are able to:

Improve postural control and stimulate the vestibular system, which are fundamental in both physiotherapy and occupational therapy

Reduce muscle tone and spasticity, facilitating movement

Promote proprioception and stimulate the tactile system, enhancing body awareness

Encourage emotional relaxation and help regulate impulsivity, offering key support from speech and language therapy and neuropsychology

Address speech and voice aspects such as vocal volume control, speech rhythm, and prosody—particularly useful in cases of dysarthria, tachyphemia, stammering, or autism spectrum disorders

Sensory innovation at the service of our patients

We have recently introduced a new therapy at our centre: transcranial electrical stimulation. This technique, specific for neurological disorders (such as anomia, aphasia, chronic pain, motor impairments, or other post-stroke sequelae, as well as ADD, ADHD, and related conditions), when combined with multisensory work, yields even greater results.

In summary, having a multisensory space not only helps achieve the aforementioned rehabilitation objectives, but also complements our clinic’s other therapeutic programmes.

At REHASALUD we firmly believe in cognitive-sensory rehabilitation as a foundation for functional recovery and the acquisition of new skills. This cognitive and sensory intervention programme, in combination with Qinera’s materials, helps to stimulate all of the senses and neural networks, thereby increasing the therapy’s effectiveness.
